Constructed in the 1920s, a disused freight line traverses through a densely populated area in the inner west of Sydney.

PSM was engaged to undertake detailed geotechnical and contamination investigations including test pitting, sampling, and field and laboratory testing for planned light rail extension. PSM also provided advice on material properties, track re-conditioning, surface and subsurface drainage, and cutting stability.

Four separate field teams worked simultaneously within a tight project schedule and operating in a heavily populated urban area.

Engineering and technical opportunities included:

• Coordination of site access, safety and environmental logistics
• Careful consideration of the existing formation and underlying subgrade to ensure light rail performance
• Identification of utilities and clearance and potholing (where required) in a highly built up existing rail environment.

Following a rigorous site investigation and modelling, PSM’s tailored approach included:

• Targeted test pit investigation to supplement the geological site model
• Combined geotechnical and contamination investigation to achieve time and cost saving
• Coordination and communication between sub-consultants.

PSM successfully planned and executed a targeted geotechnical site investigation, coordinated all site approvals and activities, and delivered the project on time and on budget.

This project is an example of successful multi-faceted project management delivered within the tight timeframe, in a heavily populated urban environment.
